Before you make any huge changes, there are a few items that you need as standard.

Firstly, enough resuable bags that you can have one in your handbag, some in the car and a couple to grab from the back of the door at home.

If you often drink on the go, a water bottle and a reusable coffee cup are essential. These will instantly cut down the amount of plastic you are responsible for. I like the look of the coffee cups that squash down simply as they will take up less space. As I don't drink coffee I am not going to endorse any particular type. Find what works for you and start using it. These days, you will not get a snarl in any cafe if you ask for a refill of water or for them to put your coffee in a reusable cup. In many cases it will now save you a few pennies.
